The division between seasons of Pokémon is based on the English version openings of each episode, and may not reflect the actual production season. The English episode numbers are based on their first airing in the United States either in syndication, on The WB or on Cartoon Network. (Other English-speaking nations largely followed either this order or the Japanese order). Subsequent airings of the English version follow the original Japanese order, except in the case of episodes which are no longer shown in English. In 2007, Pokémon: Johto League Champions started airing on Toonami Jetstream.
The fourth season of Pokémon (Pokémon: Johto League Champions in the English adaptation) was formerly licensed by 4Kids Entertainment in North America and formerly distributed by Geneon Entertainment USA on home video and also formerly distributed by Warner Bros. Family Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television Animation on television when it aired on Kids’ WB! and Cartoon Network, also in North America. It is now licensed by The Pokémon Company International and distributed by VIZ Media on both home video and television. Ash meets his rival Casey at the Bug Catching Contest. The competition between the two is fierce. Misty gets mad at Casey because she is pushing her Pokémon too hard. Meanwhile,Team Rocket has trapped Ash in a cage. Casey’s Chikorita evolves into a Bayleef to rescue Ash. Ash wins the contest with the prizes: A Sun Stone and a Beedrill Ash had caught. Ash gave the Beedrill to Casey because of her love for striped yellow-colored Pokémon.
In the USA, seven volumes were released on DVD and 61 VHS volumes for the series by Viz Video and Pioneer. Since Viz stopped relying on Pioneer (now Geneon) for distribution of the series, the DVDs and VHS tapes have been out-of-print. Viz Media released Pokémon: Johto League Champions – The Complete Collection on DVD in the United States on May 31, 2016 Ash Ketchum challenges the Goldenrod City Gym Leader Whitney to win his next badge to compete in the Johto League. After Ash easily beats Whitney’s Nidorina and Clefairy, Whitney sends out her third and final Pokémon Miltank. Miltank defeats Ash’s Cyndaquil and Totodile with its Rollout attack. Ash, in despair chooses Pikachu as his final Pokémon but despite their combined efforts and a strategy involving shocking Miltank while it’s still wet from Totodile’s Water Gun attack, Miltank’s Rollout is just too strong and as a result, Pikachu soon faints, resulting in Whitney winning the battle.
